Say hello to: QUETZALCOATL

QUETZALC (ket-sol-ko-AT-lus) (Named after the Aztec feathered serpent god, Quetzalcoatl)

Not a DINOSAUR, but a giant PTEROSAUR. Quetzalcoatlus is the largest known flying creature. One found in late Cretaceous rock in Texas had a 40 foot (12 m) wingspread. It had a small head and a long neck. Together they measured 8 feet (2.5 m) long. Quetzalcoatlus had a long, slender beak, and it may have probed in the mud for mollusks, or it may have been vulture-like and fed on carcasses. It probably lived on flat, low-lying ground, and it may have used thermal updrafts (rising columns of warm air) to become airborne. This flying giant is known from parts of the wings or one individual and scattered bones of a dozen smaller ones.
