Say hello to: OVIRAPTOR

[ Oviraptor Skull ]

OVIRAPTOR (oh-vih-RAP-tor) "Egg Stealer" (Latin ovum = egg + raptor robber, because it was found near a NEST of EGGS)

A small Late Cretaceous COELUROSAUR. This dinosaur was similar to ORNITHOMIMUS but was much smaller, it was only 5 feet (1.5m) long. With its lightly built skull, large BRAIN and powerful, toothless beak, Oviraptor resembled birds even more closely than Ornithomimus. Its body may even have been insulated by feathers or something similar.

Oviraptor had huge HANDS with three long, slender fingers that were capable of holding prey. It walked on two long, slender legs. Part of several skeletons of this little THEROPOD were found in Mongolia. One specimen was found near a nest of Protoceratops eggs. This has led scientists to assume that Oviraptor ate eggs. Its diet probably also included insects and berries, and it may have scavenged on carcasses of dead animals like crows of today.

Classification: Coelurosauria, Theropoda, Saurischia
