Say hello to: ORNITHOMIMUS

Ornithomimus

ORNITHOMIMUS (or-nith-o-MY-mus) "Bird Imitator" (Greek ornitho = bird + mimos = imitator, mimic, because it resembled an ostrich)

A Late Cretaceous ORNITHOMIMID ("ostrich dinosaur") that lived in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Mongolia, and Alberta, Canada. It is known from the incomplete skeletons of several different individuals. This BIPEDAL dinosaur so closely resembled STRUTHIOMIMUS that some scientists consider them to be the same. However, others are convinced that the two were different dinosaurs.

,i>Ornithomimus was probably about 8 feet (2.5m) tall and 15 feet (4.5m) long. Most of its length was neck and TAIL. A horny beak covered its toothless jaws. Its diet may have consisted of fruit, small REPTILES, insects, and the EGGS of other dinosaurs. Ornithomimus may have been ENDOTHERMIC (warm blooded). It probably could run as swiftly as an ostrich. Few other dinosaurs would have been faster. Although its head was small. it had quite a large brain-case, and it is considered to be one of the most intelligent of the dinosaurs. Its UNTELLIGENCE and its SPEED were its best DEFENSES against larger predators.

Classification: Coelurosauria, Theropoda, Saurischia
